Background of SOSWE

The Society of Sarawakians Writing in English (SOSWE) comprises of a group of Sarawakians based in Miri, Sarawak, who shared a common interest in writing. The inaugural meeting was held at Grand Palace and the first protem committee was formed on 24th November 1997, led by Ms Abby Lau.

The Society of Sarawakians Writing in English (SOSWE) was officially registered under the name of PERTUBUHAN PENULIS BAHASA INGGERIS ZON UTARA SARAWAK
SOCIETY OF ENGLISH WRITERS NORTHERN ZONE SARAWAK


SOSWE'S OBJECTIVES

  • to cultivate a general interest in the art of writing of any genre
  • to encourage local writers to write through organizing activities like writing contests,.workshops, seminars, talks, etc.
  • to promote research activities with special emphasis on the social cultural aspects of Sarawak
  • to foster a closer relationship among local writers who are residing in Sarawak.

MEMBERSHIP

The Society membership is open to all Sarawkians aged 18 and above who are interested in writing and who are residing in Sarawak, members of other writers' associations registered in and outside Malaysia can apply for affiliated membership. Entrance fee RM 50.00 and annual subscription RM 60 are payable to the Treasurer upon approval of his or her membership application.

ACTIVITIES

The Society usually meets once a month to read and share a book and have an open writing session of various topic.
